What is OCD?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder where individuals have recurring, unwanted thoughts and ideas which cause distress. The condition is made up of intrusive, mental “obsessions” which can come in many different forms, such as fears of contamination, harming someone, or something terrible happening, to name a few. This leads to an individual performing a “compulsion” to prevent these fears from coming true in an attempt to reduce the anxiety experienced by the initial obsession.

This repetitive behaviour can end up in what is known as rituals, and while performing these rituals can alleviate the anxiety and bring about temporary relief this is only a short-term fix until the next time an individual is faced with another unwanted obsession. Although the onset of OCD for some people can be during childhood or puberty, OCD can affect people of any gender and any age, regardless of their social or cultural background.
